Questions on Monasticism

I attended private Catholic schools operated by two different Benedictine Abbeys. Both are large, beautiful monasteries that bring to mind the quintessential Medieval abbeys of Europe and Gregorian Chant. As Benedictines, their motto is 'ora et labora', work and prayer and their lives are formed by that (via the Rule of St. Benedict---Google it!). While they live their lives in ancient ways, when it comes to regulated silence in the cloister, fasting, strict schedule of prayer, etc. they are 'of the world' in that they are modern educators running successful schools for today's youth. They are teachers / professors, administrators, artists, scientists, musicians, etc.

So, yes, in these cases at least, you would be able to listen to music, study, travel, etc....With limitations of course...As in, if you decide you want to study medicine and Father Abbot sends you away to medical school, then you study medicine...You don't drop out and go skiing, for example. Benedictine monks, for example, take vows of stability and obedience, in that they take vows to a particular community (one monastery or another) and obedience to the needs of the community as assigned by your superiors. So, if, while you are a postulant and novice, you are assigned to work in the kitchen or pick apples, then you do that. Or if the community needs you to fulfill a particular role within the school and put your own studies on hold, then you do that. Because in monastic life, you aren't in it just for yourself, otherwise you'd just be a hermit, but even then, the Carthusians, for instance, live separately as one...

DM me if I can answer other questions. I recommend that you start Googling and do a whole lot of reading on what is out there.
