So a very kind lady who worked at the university I went to and has since followed my "journey" and kept in touch, just got diagnosed with brain cancer. 50 years old, just retired and about to move to another country to live it up.

I sent a message to her husband offering advice about dealing with the initial shock, next steps, and even offered to do research and contact Emory docs.

Then I went online looking at the stats for that cancer. I told my wife, "well God damn, it's not looking good babe." and she asked me what the odds are of survival. I said "13% survive 3 years, not good, not good." I could tell she paused so I asked her what's up and she hesitantly said "aren't those... Similar to your odds?" and then it hit me, yup, mine are 18% chance of 5 year survival.

I guess the point is how dull you can become to your own situation, and this kinda threw it back into perspective. 18% and 13%, ha. Talk about luck.
