r/ireland in a nutshell

If we put something so essential as our national independence at the hazard of a majority vote, then every other right and possession goes with it.

For if it is within the right of the majority to abolish national freedom for 'peace' or 'progress' or any other illusive reason, then by the same dictation it would be equally within their right to destroy the latter.

It would also be in their right to destroy the spirit of Nationality; to abolish our national language; to limit civil rights; to fasten an iniquitous social system upon the nation, etc.

It is clear then that if we are to own our own nation, truly possess and direct it, faithfully work and develop it, we must put outside the category of things with which it is legitimate for a majority to interfere - the nations nationhood and its independence, on which all our non-essential rights are based upon.
