/r/IWantOut: Vancouver -> Bay Area or Seattle

You're young. It's a good time to go explore.

I turn 24 in June and assuming I have 3 co-op work terms under my belt, I'll probably by 27 by the time I finish my degree. I don't think that's exactly young. I'm seriously considering only doing one work term to save time.

What do you want to do 15 years from now? Be a senior dev?

That is a very good question, to which I don't know the answer. What I really want to do is make a lot of money. But, you don't make money in a technical position. You make money in a senior leadership/management position, or you're an entrepreneur. I would love to be an entrepreneur but the health insurance thing scares me a little bit, I won't lie. I want to be a leader. I want to treat my employees well, I don't want to be that penny pinching startup founder who is more concerned playing the VC game than giving his employees a decent standard of living. I would strongly consider a remote job with a SV/Seattle/NYC firm, so I could live in Vancouver but get paid decent money. The best of both worlds.

Another thing I'm weighing is graduate school. I want to do research in the Big Data umbrella, and it's tough without a master's. I'm open to doing my own research instead (learning machine learning, data mining and natural language processing up to graduate level, reading papers on my own, etc.), but for some reason I have this affinity with grad school. I get to stand on the shoulders of giants, do research with leaders in Big Data, I can be a TA or sessional instructor who can actually speak English (this is a big problem at SFU; since so many talented undergrads are picked off by lucrative industry jobs and a thesis based master's takes about 20 months, the department can't recruit enough domestic students, resulting in too many international students in graduate studies. The department has developed a compressed BSc-MSc program to counteract this, that can shave the high school entry-master's time frame by 18-20 months.)
