r/The_Donald is imploding, following Trump's pro-gun control comments, users upset and expressing distaste with Trump, mods are banning countless longtime posters / anyone disagreeing with Trump. It's thoroughly good - and happening right now.

I like Trump. I support Trump. I am right-wing.

But you're right, there's no way to spin this that isn't pro-gun control. And that is not something I support. I still think Trump was right-wing when I voted for him, but it appears that he's changed over time.
But I think people are really misinterpreting what it means that Trump has said this. The reason so many people are defending Trump to the death is because despite it all, he's pretty much the only relevant right-wing force in politics. Neo-Conservatives and Libertarians are for all intents and purposes left-wing, so the right has got very little going for it aside from Trump. But if Trump is shown to also be a neo-conservative, as it appears he has become, then that demonstrates to the American right that there is not a single relevant force looking out for their interests in the entirety of American politics. They will be shown that their goals cannot be achieved democratically. And that won't result in them abandoning their goals, but abandoning Democracy.
