The full decommissioning cost was not included in the operating budget.
To date, customers across Southern California have paid approximately $1 billion of the $4.2 billion in what’s known as a decommissioning fund.
There’s still billions of dollars in funding that has not yet been collected nor included in any sort of operating budget. It gets worse though.
The $3.3 billion customers will pay over 10 years is actually meant to cover the profit Edison and minority owner San Diego Gas & Electric would have made from San Onofre had it remained open.
This is why solar panels are flying off shelves yet no one wants to build a nuclear power plant. They are unprofitable money pits.
