Rand Paul's Birthday Megathread

I think colleges need to do a better job with career counseling as well.

High schools too

Lots and lots and LOTS of kids these days are basically being told from birth "go to college or you'll never own a home, never get a nice job, always be worried about money", etc. that so many kids are going to college with absolutely no drive or concept about what kind of degree will actually be useful in the job market which leaves them with a fancy piece of paper but no actual skills.

...Well, not always, but this is the case for a considerable number of kids going into college.

I knew one girl who was an out-of-state student at my univesity. Her parents were moderately well off, but wouldn't pay her tuition. (I don't know why.) Her tuition was $40k/yr — that doesn't include rent, food, textbooks, or anything else besides just tuition. Her major was theatre arts.

Now, I didn't want to be a dick, but if you're going to walk out of college with probably over $160k in debt for a degree in theatre arts, if that makes you happy it's none of my business to butt my head into your personal business, but the vast majority of actors never become full-time actors, and even then full-time actors in theatre get paid like $60k/yr if you're lucky. And you'll have to live in a city with a thriving arts district, so that's probably not going to be cheap. So good luck paying that off before you die.

I really don't want to be a dick or sound like "le stem master race xDxDxD" but college tuition and student loans are no fucking joke. I honestly have nothing but sympathy for people drowning in student debt, but on the other hand it was your decision to incur all that debt in the first place.

I stayed in-state, got some scholarships and now I personally have about $14,000 in debt. I honestly consider myself lucky compared to a lot of other people but there are plenty of ways to lower the student debt you're going to walk out with and as an adult you should take full advantage of them.

End rant lol
