Rant about FMIL and budget issues. Do we cancel and elope??

Feeling a lot better about being about to make this work. However, I wanted to share that a lot has come to light over the past days. FH has shared various texts that FMIL has sent him regarding the wedding budget (he’s been super busy at work so they mostly went unanswered, so just sharing excerpts for privacy)

FMIL: “I’m getting worried. I think you should not be having a wedding you can’t afford.”

FMIL: I cant stand to see you stressed. I want what’s best for you”

FMIL: “I have been so worried about your finances. Why spend all that on a party. Enjoy it, put money into your house, etc”

FMIL: “You know what...you can always have a wedding 3, 4, 5 years from now”

I honestly don’t think she understands the reason why we were feeling financial stress, or she is trying shift blame away from herself?

She clearly has been pressuring FH to cancel the wedding, but through our discussions, it quite honestly seems like she does not have basic understand of how a contract with a vendor works. She was surprised to learn that we would actually lose quite a bit of money from our vendors by canceling, and they won’t necessarily just let you apply your deposits toward a new date.

At one point on the phone she actually suggested that FH and I put the expenses on a credit card as a means to ALLEVIATE our stress. Based on this, I really question whether she understands how credit cards work.
