[RANT] Although I am a record collector, I hate record collectors...

I understand OP. If you bought a stamp to collect it, and never use it, so what? USPS has a few more cents... An old stamp? Let someone else look at it. If you collect albums for their album art and enjoy that aspect, why not have a good record player and enjoy the best part? I know that is subjective, but we're talking about a format of art that exists because of the music. If you aren't into the music, why not buy movie posters? Concert posters? Band posters? Records were pressed to be listened to.

When you collect a stamp, you aren't denying someone the privilege of using that stamp over and over and over. Odd collectors that do not listen to their records deny the ears of many the pleasure of that record.

If it is really your thing to buy obscure records and not listen to them, I hope it helps with some sort of anxiety or fills a important gap in your life. If not, you are denying someone else a special experience. It get it - you're neurotic. Maybe a parent collected and it helps with a loss. Thats cool. If its just some hipster obsession with vintage vinyl, let it go. There is a good chance someone else would enjoy that record more.

If your a reseller like OP hates, kill yourself. Go work in advertising, and then kill yourself. Stop corrupting something people are passionate about. We collect because we love all aspects of vinyl. I would much rather find a record in a dusty store for $2 (or $20) and have to search for years (and earn it). I hate seeing that record behind the counter for $100 (especially if the person that is buying it as a trophy piece never to be listened to).

I would argue that not listening is (in most cases) worse, just different.

As a collector that has thousands of records that have all been listened to, it's painful to know records are just sitting collecting dust. Collect another medium or take a listen. Records were made to be listened to. Would you buy a painting to sit on a shelf and never be seen? Do what you want with your property, but would you feel just a little guilty if you had a Monet on a shelf never to be looked at? I would.
