"Rapitty Rap"

I try to look at technical proficiency in rap like I look at it with instrumentation in rock.

What Dream Theater or ..DragonForce does is very impressive. And honestly, a song here or there is a great way to have these guys just blow your mind.

But...technical virtuosity in of itself doesn't make a great song.

An absolute lack of it, doesn't either.

Trap and mumble rap bothers me b/c.. it's not side stepping the technicality debate and finding other ways to craft really good songs.

Sure - the songs are fun, sexy, even a bit threatening sounding. But it's just a continuation of hip hop being cartoonish in it's obsessions about materialism, sex and drugs in an overt, in-your face kind of way.

Lyrics have become so low brow, they're now at or beneath what ICP did or does put out.

I'm not talking skill here - I'm talking content. I'm talking poetry. I'm talking about the ability to touch someone's soul.

Trap and Mumble-rap is just the polar opposite gimmick from what Aesop Rock is doing, or what Wu-tang did, or all the Speedom type tracks. It's fun. Honestly. I'm not trying to be too much of a hater - I have found myself finding some of the songs quite infectious. But in the grand scheme of things, it's just disposable trash. It's meaningless and worthless music.

At least Aesop Rock gets some respect.

Once the cool factor that powers shit like 2Chainz or Lil Uzi Vert runs out - they'll be mocked at like Limp Bizkit or Good Charlotte.
