"Rare" Skilled Trades a possible hidden gem for INTPs?

How's this for a rare trade...

I fucked up in college, joined the military, got a near perfect ASVAB score, got a job working with satellite communications equipment, and then spent the next five years in the military (at war and in garrison). I parlayed that into a job controlling communications satellites outside of the military.

The gist of my job is maybe 1-2 hours of actual work in an 8 hour shift while I am a firefighter for problems that may or may not pop up. The rest of the time I read books or sit on websites. I'm 12 credits away from finishing my bachelors degree in a subject I am passionate about and will graduate debt free thanks to the GI Bill.

That being said I despise my job. I make relatively a lot of money. Too much for me to be willing to change my circumstances. I don't have skills that transfer to jobs with normal hours and will pay enough to maintain my lifestyle. I work 8 hour shifts round the clock. Spend 4 months working from 11pm to 7am for close to a decade and see how you feel. Training people takes about a year and if you're not good at the job the company would rather nurse you along and have the good employees pick up the slack than fire you and rehire someone decent. We have a lot of dead weight (if I was given the opportunity I would fire half of the workers and replace them) due to this management philosophy which makes the few legitimately good operators extremely resentful.

I could go on and on about this shit. I'm going to delete this comment soon because I'd rather it not sit on the internet but thought it would be helpful for you. This gist is I'm well remunerated, don't have a lot of work, the hours kill me, it's so hard to find good employees we end up with garbage workers who are mentally incapable of doing the job correctly, and have exactly zero transferable skills.

Think long and hard before you look for a "rare" skilled trade. It just might fuck you into comfort. It's not as oxymoronic as you might think.
