Rauner vetoes bill requiring state licenses for gun dealers

I don't like the idea of supporting someone named u/chicago2ndamendment when they have an account only 2 weeks old. (Insert right wing infiltration of local subreddit conspiracy theory). But the following comes from a fairly far left liberal:

Illinois has actually shown itself to be untrustworthy when it comes to the 2nd amendment and slippery slope arguments. Do you remember what legislation was passed/mulled over back in the 80-90's?

Guns were villified hardcore and they kept raising the cost of registration and taxes so that only the rich could afford to legally buy firearms. Likewise, they essentially priced a bunch of blue-collar workers out of legal gun possession because the registration costs went from like 10$ per 5 guns, every 5 years (i think) to some insane amount like 200$ per gun (maybe per 2 guns) every 2 years.

Over the course of a couple decades, the slippery slope proved true.

Thankfully, I think the courts have done away with much of the red tape. But I have to be honest: I'll never tell the state what guns I purchase, if any. Its none of their business and as a otherwise law-abiding citizen, I refuse to open myself up to having my property seized or taxed after I already bought it.

In short: If you think Illinois can be trusted with firearm legislation, you must not have been around for very long.

Toss in cook county/chicago regulations and its pretty easy to see why moderate/liberal gun owners from the area don't support more legislation. We have lived through the toughest gun control in the USA for years; conflating the need for a western/southern state to ratchet up gun control with a call to do it in illinois is only going to harm the national effort.
