‘They’re chasing people out of the city’: New property tax report shocks Cook County treasurer, residents

I'm not complaining about my property taxes, but this note:

People who are "house poor" compared to income are doing just fine, but I could see how someone could easily be taxed out of a home due to property tax increases which are triple their adjusted salaries.

...is on point. Our lender pre-approved us for a jumbo loan up 1.2mm, which would have left us comfortable, but definitely aware of our monthly budget (We are fortunate and thankful to be in this situation). Then we looked at the property taxes for properties in that price range, and quickly moved our price range down. We found what we wanted without sacrificing our core requirements at a fraction of the price, and a fraction of the taxes. I support Property Taxes, but for some folks, they will re-evaulate how much home they're going to invest into, in a neighborhood, especially in that middle/upper-middle tier, where you make enough money to live comfortably and without worry, but it's not "fuck you I got mine" money by any means.
