Re-Read Discussion Ch. 38 - The Cardinal Sin

"If my suspicions are true, you would hardly do Dumbledore's bidding in any case, Mr. Potter."

He suspected that H=V, right?

Yes.

Okay, I have nothing on this conversation with Lucius. What the hell were they talking about?

> "If my suspicions are true, you would hardly do Dumbledore's bidding in any case, Mr. Potter."

He suspected that H=V, right?

I was puzzled, at first, for it seemed not in your own interest; it took me days to understand whose interest was being served, and then it all finally became clear. And it is also obvious that you are weak, in some ways if not others.

How? Whose? Why?

Lucius thinks the Boy-Who-Lived would want a united country to defeat future Dark Lords, just as David Monroe would. Instead, he opposed David Monroe's (that is, Quirrellmort's) Christmas speech. Lucius doesn't know anything about Muggle history, so he tried to figure out whose side, in Wizarding Britain's politics, Harry was on. Finally Lucius realized that Harry being Voldemort was the most likely explanation for the speech — but that that didn't jibe with his steering Draco and Hermione into being allies.

And it is also obvious that you are weak, in some ways if not others.

Weak magically but not intellectually, I think.

"Of course..." said Lucius slowly. "I do feel the fool now. This whole time you were just pretending to have no idea what we were talking about."

Why? Did he? He did have no idea, right? Then why did Lucius think he didn't? Or did he not? Whaaa...

I'm not sure on this. It sounds as if, as the conversation went on, Lucius had started to throw out the H=V theory. (Though Lucius's dialogue doesn't really sound like it.) But then for some reason this line completely confirmed it for him:

"I think not," said Harry in a dry voice. "I prefer to deal with the part of House Malfoy that's my own age."

I'm not sure what to make of this. Just from the syntax of the exchange, it sounds almost like Lucius was interpreting Harry's statement as something ostensibly true about Harry Potter's age — referring to Draco — but, in the private understanding that Lucius thought he and Harrymort had at the moment, was actually true of Voldemort's age, meaning the reference would have actually been to Abraxas Malfoy? But I don't think any facts from the story back up that interpretation. So I don't know.
