I was discussing this recently with a friend who is also an atheist, and I suggested that perhaps we deserved some blame for the fall of society we are witnessing because we have always smiled politely when people talked about their crazy religious beliefs.

On the plus side, as society chooses up sides in this civil war of stupidity, I have noticed my religious liberal friends are becoming less religious. I have a different friend who has always been pretty Catholic, and 25 years ago we were even having friendly debates about the existence of god. Nowadays I hear nothing like that from him, and he jokes about the anti-vaxers clinging to religion to save them from the virus.
