I really do think that for better or worse, Batman v Superman was a very thorough deconstruction of the Superman character from Man of Steel and is interesting to watch unfold.

I think it's self deluding to imply that most people, and most people who dislike the film, expected a popcorn flick.

I think a lot of people saw "Superman" and expected Christopher Reeves Jr. to pop up and wow everyone, and let's face it, Cavill does kind of look like him. He even has that silly tuff of hair on his brow (compare Cavill to Reeves here).

Reeves' Superman is chipper, cheery, the quintessential boy scout. Cavill's is not. People got disappointed by this because they wanted to feel good, they didn't, and took it out on the movies.

I mean, it's great that you can see what many people who like MoS and BvS see, i.e. the more complex and brooding character that was actually depicted, but something to keep in mind is that, excepting camp versions, Batman is always brooding and complex. Superman simply isn't.
