Really? None of the 1,500 kids in my school leans conservative?: Guest opinion | OregonLive.com

Your comparision appears to be an over simplification, however, many of these people "deal with it" by voting for republicans.

For a more realistic comparision, try this.

Average Portland person on way home from work on the MAX gets jammed up because of a protest downtown in Jan of '17. He respects free speech, he doesn't disagree with the frustrations of the crowd, but he just spent 11 hours at work, and has to get his niece from daycare. MAX trip and associated transit time gets him to the daycare 2 hours late, he has to cough up an extra 90 bucks he doesnt have in liquid cash. Then he hears about an ICE protest, and while he doesn't like Sessions or Trumps policy of family seperation, his support wains for thier cause. Then when Ospirg knocks on his door, which he used to contribute to regularily, he doesn't donate - then he is feeling a financial squeeze, he looks at his art tax form and wonders what its actually doing. A few weeks later a run down RV with bad tags moves in on the corner, and within the same week he takes leave to stands at DMV for 2 hours in line to renew his wife's car registration.

Pretty soon, that guy can get pretty cynical about houselessness, apathetic to protestors, and annoyed that being progressive isn't improving his life, nieghborhood, situation are feeling worse. He may then consider Einstein's definition of insanity, and consider his personal stance on policy.
