Reasonable number of audition songs?

You hit the nail on the head as to what I'm feeling. I've been playing mostly guitar, but also bass, in busy cover bands for a while now.

We've only talked on the phone. They sounded nice but did make some big talk that didn't sit right...12 songs does sound kind of bush-league as you say. I, however, wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

When we've auditioned people in my band, we know within the 1st song whether they know what they're doing. The 2nd and 3rd song is to support our feeling on the 1st song.

IMO, matching objectives, personalities and vision is just as important. A virtuoso is no good if of no use if they can't get along. That's why we spend an hour talking compared to 30 minutes running through 3 songs.

I have no problem learning 12 songs, but I don't want to waste my time either on songs that won't work in a cover band dance format.
