In 2017, genetic testing revealed remains found in a grave at Birka, Sweden were female. Interpretation of the grave had widely accepted it to be the burial of a high ranking Viking warrior and it was assumed to be a male buried there. With the revelation of the deceased being female, the researchers received enormous public interest, inquires and no shortage of potentially controversial interpretations.
Now with some time having passed since the findings were publicized, the researchers have published a new paper addressing the reaction surrounding the discovery. The article is carefully put together. I feel it does an excellent job attempting to rein in speculation and emphasizes the need for further data. I cannot understand how some people completely discarded all prior interpretation of the grave based on the news the occupant was biologically female.
