Recommendations on a car for a new driver

Where do you live as a lot of the car insurance cost can be attributed to location.

I lived in Manchester City Centre when I learned to drive at the age of 32.

I passed first time and did the advanced course too that the DVLA state can bring down insurance costs - note that not one insurance company would honour this so don't believe the hype.

I bought a Corsa 1.2 for 8k and every insurance company wanted 6k for the first year to insure it. I am not kidding on this one. The trade price of the car was less than the insurance.

The car showroom had it's own insurer they put customers on to and they wanted 4k but only because I was buying the car from them.

I called Aviva and had a chat with them. We went over all options i.e. parked in a secure garage, less mileage for the year and nothing would bring he cost down however the sales guy and I did a deal where I could have it on 10k miles for the year for 2k if I paid the entire thing up front which I did right there.

You could see where they were coming from as I lived in the Green Quarter in Manchester and the streets are littered with broken glass from cars that have been broken into, fresh glass every day too.

My car lasted 6 months before it was broken into as well.

I moved to Cheshire shortly after and Aviva ended up refunding 600 quid to me just by changing my address on my account, biggest refund the customer service chap had processed.

I kept Aviva or another year, the cost was 800 for that year and this year I switched to John Lewis and it is 600.

If I hit January with no claims then I have the three years no claims discount to consider and will likely be paying about 300 to 400 for 2016.

I recommend you get yourself on Compare the Market, avoid all the unknown companies and stick to the brand name ones and call them to see if they can do anything for you.
