“Reconstructing Arab society on a democratic political basis and reconciling Islam and the modern world remains the greatest task confronting the contemporary generation”

I don't know. I think our issues are deeper than just seperation of church and state. It seems that it doesn't matter whether the people in power are secular or islamists they always end up abusing power. Our problem is that we never have rulers that are interested in the people's best interests or longterm well being. And usually they cling to power and would do anything to keep it to the detriment of society. I believe this short sightedness is the reason some arab countries are unstable. I'm reminded of the saying "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit". I feel that the people in power can't look past their nose. I don't know if I'm contributing to the discussion with my point of view.
