Would I be mad as hell and want revenge in a brutal manner?

Almost certainly yes.

Fortunately I’m not in that awful situation so I can look at it from a distance and try to be rational.

Do you think society overall would be better off if we acted on emotion and gave in to out base instincts when we experience hardship?

Having your balls ripped off or otherwise being tortured to death may be worse in the moment in a way we can easily comprehend, but I can’t imagine thinking that life in prison as anything other than a severe punishment. Imagine never being able to see beauty again, never going anywhere, never being able to experience anything new, never feeling a woman’s touch, never experiencing whatever small part of this world it is that brings you personally a bit of joy, and knowing that, no matter what you do, it shall be so until the day you die. Is that really getting off lightly?
