Reddit - What sort of birthday gift is appropriate for a non-romanic partnership, that will not give off the wrong impression either?

It's the little things that can make someone's day.

I had a friend complain about getting his wife flowers on Mothers Day, and he joked that he'd never gotten flowers ever.

So, I sent him a dozen long stem roses with a card, and waited for my phone to ring.

"Dude. It was you that sent the flowers, right?"

"Yep, how are they?"

"They're great, but the card says Sorry about the AIDS. It's not your handwriting. You have to tell me what they said on the phone when you did this."

"Oh no, I ordered these in person and watched them write that card."

That was about 7 years ago now, and he still has that cursive, flowery AIDS card framed in his bedroom.
