Reddit is not really geared towards discussions.

I think nest comments are tremendously easier to read posts with many comments than the more traditional flat style. Flat discussion forums are terrible for finding old information in my experience. For example, when I get a new cell and want to root it I'll browse a few different sites that all have flat comments. Trying to search for common issues often returns nothing but results of people asking the same question and getting told to search the forum as it's already answered in the past. Three pages of search results later I find the thread that answers the question but it's 171 pages long, it's difficult to follow the 50 different conversations going on, and I have to click through to page 86 before I find the comment I was looking for. Contrast that to reddit where I can search (with google site:reddit.com/r/subreddit) and find a relevant post with the answer upvoted towards the top. However if I want to discuss anything I have to hope that it isn't archived and the specific person I reply to responds because no one else will see it if it's older than a couple days.

How would you improve upon the current nested comment threads to improve them? I find new comment highlighting to be the only worthwhile gold feature and I wish that were a default option for users. Also, I think another post sorting option should be available in addition to the Hot, Rising, New, Controversial called Active or similar that displays posts that have already fallen off Hot but still have comments being posted. Another useful option might be a comment sorting option in posts that would display a flat view like you can for a subreddit (www.reddit.com/r/theoryofreddit/comments) so you can quickly jump to the active portion of older posts.
