Reddit, today is Mr. Rogers' birthday. What's something we can do today to each be the person he knew we could be?

Some words of advice- Many teachers are uncaring and while sometimes you can be places with awesome teachers, you can also be placed with catty, nasty, people who will look down on you if you connect with or show empathy to the kids. The reason so many people hated school? Yeah, lots of... Not so great teachers making it a bad experience for them.

I've had a variety of teachers on my placements. Some were wonderful. Most were average and did their job well enough, and would plan well, and deliver content well, but could not connect with the kids in any meaningful way (And, to many teachers, sadly that is what teaching should be, education, not compassion) so at best kids were bored (if they had a nice home life) and at worst had no support in their lives (If school was uncaring and they went home to a bad environment). Some I had who absolutely should NOT be teaching or in a school at all, and were unemphatic and unorganized and unpleasant to work with and could not even teach, let alone care for the children.

Don't wear your heart on your sleeve if it may damage your success on placement. In the 4 years in my course a LOT of us got bitten along the way with that (And out school empathizes care and compassion so we all bought that into the class with us). It's shitty and awful but you need to graduate and get your own class before you have the freedom to enact your own philosophy on teaching and guiding children. Until you get there you operate under the class's teacher and need to fall in line with their philosophy and ways as much as you can. Because if you fail, you can't help anyone at the end of it.

Hopefully your experiences are much better then mine, but if you encounter this, remember, you CAN make a short term compromise in morals or philosophy for long term gain and ability to help people. My inability to do that has bit me in the butt a few times over my life.
