As odd as it sounds this is actually a thing done by some juvi judges can do I believe most places call it differed punishment. It was thought up to keep kids out of lockup or circumvent idiotic sentences in old laws. They usually plea bargain to a lesser misdemeanor crime it saves a kid from having a felony record that can carry into adulthood.

I got charged with felony assault with intent to do major bodily harm (what amounts to attempted murder) when I was 15, it was differed to a lesser unruly conduct charge. A little rich boy spat on me and stabbed me with a pen, since "his daddy was a prosecutor, he could do whatever he wanted and us poor kids couldn't do anything" (fucking idiot told the police this during interrogation) I hit him with a 3 piece combo, he bit through the tip of his tounge, broke some teeth, and fell unconscious into a chair fracturing a vertebrae. Since he was hospitalized it was a felony. The judge differed my sentence dropped charge to unruly child (catch all charge misdemeanor), I was ordered 14 days in juvie (time spent till trial),2 years probation, an apology letter, anger management, and 10 pages on college ruled paper of the sentence "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".

Other kid got 30 days for stabbing me, and charged as an unruly child as well, his father resigned as prosecutor.
