Reddit, what are some of your HOA horror stories?

Next to our house was an empty lot at the same level as our house. The new owners started building a house. They built it up over 8 feet!! Then, to add insult to injury, did not put in a retaining wall, had all of their drainage go underground and drain right at our property line (when it would have been just as easy to go to the street), and slanted their entire driveway toward our property.

Damage from water happens quickly. Our paver driveway sustained over $15k in damage in just a matter of months.

After multiple conversation with the HOA (which was supposed to protect us from exactly this sort of thing), it was clear that they were not going to do anything to make the neighbor correct the damaging situation. Then, they refused to speak to us. We spent thousands of dollars on lawyers to make them speak with us. Then, we submitted a plan to build a retaining wall to fix the water damage issue with our own money on our own property. However, the plan was denied because the 2 foot wall required to hold back the flood water was 2 inches too high. (We were told by our contractor that this was the lowest height to hold back the water and don't want to spend on something that won't fix the problem.)

The water damage continues to erode our driveway and is now going under the foundation of our home. The HOA refuses to speak to us or even consider any type of correction to the problem.

We are just confused. It seems illogical that they wouldn't want to fix the issue to protect home values (especially at our expense). However, they have never communicated to us why they are doing this.

Looking to sell (quickly!) ...
