Reddit, what is your opinion on euthanasia (on humans) ?

I think that it should definitely be legal. The process of dying can be both extremely painful and undignified.

In regard to pain, the level of pain that a person on their deathbed has to endure can be overwhelming. People often comment that there is morphine and other drugs to care of the pain, that it isn't that horrible. This is not true. Dying patients can receive higher doses of drugs than a heroin addict could only dream of, and still experience a pain that is almost out of this world.

But even if the pain was not an issue, I would argue that not allowing euthanasia is a gigantic breach of human dignity and value. Dying is a process that often strips you not only of your physical health, but also which makes what mentally constitutes you less coherent. A body that is breaking down easily causes mental confusion and deterioration, not to mention all of the drugs that are pumped into the body of the patient in palliative care. You also quickly lose all control of your own life, which is an important concept of dignity for many people.

Another important aspect is a person's relations to his family and friends—or his most beloved ones. Does he want them to witness his physical and mental deterioration? Not only that, how does his relation with his family and friends suffer when he is not himself anymore? Does he want them to wish that he was dead already when he is at his worst state?

I think that it is easy to reach the conclusion that legalizing euthanisia is the best option. The countries that have legalized it have also showed great responsibility in handling it, showing that it is possible to achieve without entering a slippery slope where you kill people without their consent. This gives very little reason to oppose euthanasia.
