Reddit, what's the most heartbreaking story from your love life?

My college boyfriend of just over a year was in a car accident that left him in a coma for months. Once he awoke, he had no recollection of the previous two years of his life, including me. His mother was never a huge fan of mine, so she edged me out pretty early on.

About ten years later, I found out from a mutual friend that before his accident, he had actually been looking at rings and was planning on asking me to marry him.

That was more than 20 years ago and it still hurts not having any real closure on what still remains to this day one of the best relationships I've ever been in.

Losing the love of your life because they simply cannot remember you is just...indescribable.
