Reddit, what's your "Just pretend like you're supposed to be here" story?

In college we had an opt-in 2 week study abroad program in China. Since the university covered a lot of the costs I decided to participate but cut most of the classes so I can get a cheap trip to Beijing.

A few days in I cut class as planned and set out to find a fried dumpling place I found online. This was before the time of smartphones but I had downloaded a map and bus routes on a pda. I get off the bus and it seems like the right place but there's a lot of construction going around so I can't be sure. It's a kind of half-developed area with construction sites dotted between dilapidated buildings.

I find my bearings and map the way to the dumpling place and find out I could either stick to the main road or cut between the buildings. I do the stupid thing and cut through, one eye on the road and the other on the PDA. Before I know it there's more construction going on all around me, and a lot of workers scurrying around speaking Mandarin. (I'm also Asian btw, but no Mandarin skills.)

I'd apparently walked directly into a construction site but at this point turning back, finding the main road and circling all the way back is really unappealing so I just keep walking, trying not to rouse any attention, until I look up and see a huge chain link gate with a group of workers milling around, like they're waiting to be let out. I look around and there are chain link fences on all sides. I honestly don't know how I got here or even how to get out of this place. I got so lost that somehow I ended up in an enclosed area where it looks like people are actually waiting to be let out.

Panic starts to set in when some dude in a construction vest calls out to me and in a very angry and harassed tone starts saying something, pointing his finger at me, walking towards me. I somehow manage to get the point across that I'm lost, and he starts pointing towards some direction so I immediately take off that way, trying to find my way out, which I eventually managed to do.

TL;dr: Got so lost that I found myself in an enclosed construction site.
