Redditors no longer on speaking terms with their former "best friend for life" due to one incident: what happened?

Can't really qualify him as my "best friend for life" but it could have turned out that way. We were coworkers roughly the same age, had the same interests and were always making each other laugh. We were both loners to a degree, so it was cool having a close relationship.

Well, not close enough apparently. He was doing some REALLY shady stuff online that I was completely unaware of. He got into massive trouble and lost his job and legally got into trouble. I had already moved out of town but we would still meet up.

It was shocking. Years have gone by. He sent me an email when everything went down, but I just couldn't respond. What he did was really creepy. It's been a while and I just can't find the time or energy to "work on" mending things. I have a wife and family and don't live near him anymore.

Part of me hates myself for not trying to reconcile or just get over it. He's been through some rough stuff since then, also, that wasn't his fault...just life stuff. I just can't.
