Redditors, what is the story behind an interaction with a homeless person that impacted you, good or bad?

I was sitting here eating my lunch out at the food trucks with a couple coworkers when I noticed a scraggly guy sitting off to the side with a couple bundles tied in pillow cases and a older pit bull mix dog. The dog was being great, just sitting there enjoying the sun. The guy looked a little troubled.

He pulled out a wrapped up sandwich (the same kind I've seen shelters give to people around here) and tore off a bit for the dog, then one for him, and he did this until the sandwich was all gone. The dog was being very well behaved about it all. Once the sandwich was gone, he and the dog sat there for a second. Then he got up and walked around looking at the trash cans to see if there was any decent food, finding nothing, he went back and set down again at the same spot.

So I watched him and the dog for a few moments while I finished my food. I approached him and asked if his dog was friendly, and he said yes. So I petted the dog for a bit while talking to the guy about the beauty of dogs and their friendships; how they are the only thing that will stick with you even when everything else is terrible. The guy was getting very emotional discussing his relationship with his dog, so I asked him if he and the dog had eaten, and he told me he splits everything with the dog.

So I reached for my wallet and pulled out $20 and gave it to him and told him to get food from the food trucks. He looked shocked and started crying; I almost did, too. I petted his dog again, shook his hand, told him I hope they have a good day and walked away.

It really touched me; having an interaction like that with a random person, letting his emotions come out, discussing the beauty of the companionship with dogs. Definitely an interaction I'll never forget.
