Redditors who grew up filthy rich, what did you think was normal till your learned otherwise?

I didn't grow up "filthy" rich but I'll chime in anyways.

I was always aware that my parents made a conscious effort to avoid spoiling my siblings and I. We got nice things, but not all the time and not in excess. The most lavish display of wealth my parents made growing up was our annual vacation- ranging from all-inclusive resorts in foreign countries to renting a private yacht with captain and chef. I knew that was something most families didn't do, but we only did it once a year and my parents were smart with their money so I assumed it was an annual splurge. In middle school I figured out my dad made around 250k or 300k a year, and my mom worked full time on top of that, but I never knew exactly how much was made or how much my parents had saved or invested.

But since I graduated high school two years ago, my parents have bought a beachfront house to rent and use as a vacation home. They have bought several new luxury cars. They bought another additional house (two bedrooms, but still) just so my husband and I can rent it at below-market rates. My sister's boyfriend caused a big legal issue with my parents and they settled outside of court for 1.5 million to avoid having their investments attacked.

This is all stuff I would have never foreseen growing up. My parents always stressed that they'd never let us go hungry or live on the streets, but they wanted us to work for what we had and appreciate the value of it. I had to get a job before I could get my first car, and my siblings had to do the same. I'm realizing my parents were a lot more conservative with their money when I was a kid because they didn't want me to take it for granted. My dad makes fuckin bank tho lol
