Redditors who grew up filthy rich, what did you think was normal till your learned otherwise?

To this day I don't really know how much money my parents make or have or how much money is in my family (my grandpa was in oil so that was my first clue). However I've had my suspicions after talking to my roommate about investment properties and vacation homes. I mentioned my parents had thought about purchasing a house for me in our college town for my time here. She was utterly confused as to why someone would do such a thing and I had to explain the concept of real estate as an investment, something up until that point I had assumed everyone's parents did. I, too, assumed people who rented were just young single students in apartments, didn't even occur to me that a family could rent a house. When the same roommate mentioned that her parents were renting a new house because the rent on the old one was too expensive it finally occurred to me that my parents were very financially sound. All of this being said my roommate drives a 2015 brand new car and mines from 2001. I have also worked full time in the summers and part time during school since I was 15.

My parents have an interesting background as my dad grew up in a home with a full staff and my mother grew up in a trailer park. The combination seems to have made them financially smart and maybe one day I'll find out exactly what our situation is. When we were kids they used to joke that their favorite thing to say to us was no. It was never, no we can't afford it, it was just no, no questions asked. I also went to private school and although no one bragged about money while we were in school (it was very small and academically focused) I recently found out a classmate's dad's company had a 1.8 billion IPO. Kid had no idea how much it was worth till it went public.
