Redditors who have had no friends for a period in your life, how did you find a new group to fit into?

I enjoyed mountain hiking for my whole life, and in 2000 moved to a city surrounded by mountains with plenty of scenic tracks and waterfalls, maybe the best city of my country for people who like this. But at first couldn't find any acquaintance who practiced it. In 2007 with 49 years old I divorced and had terrible 2 first years, without any social contacts except workmates. Finally I took the initiative to join a mountain hiking club and it was awesome : people who like this activity have a certain vibe that makes them very sociable among themselves. We talk a lot while hiking, lots of jokes and cultural interchange, as I never see other human activities allowing. We are a circle of friends from 13 to 68 years old, the common interest for nature overrides any barriers of age, work area, social or wealth status. It's an activity that does not require any skill or fitness like sports, we have overweight and skinny people, nerds and funny goofies, and everybody accepts and engages in friendship with everyone, no mockery or tensions. I strongly recommend this option, if you have this option where you live. We wonder if it is the outdoor environment, with all the landscapes, clean air, trees and forest smells and noises, that makes everybody forget the stress and aggressiveness of work days in a big city. Quite possibly. Good luck in your search.
