Redditors who have quit a job by just stopping showing up for it, what's your story? And has this resulted in any negative effects on subsequent job searches?

I wouldn't dare do this now that I have a decent career going, but I did this a few times when I was in my early to mid 20s. First time was an overnight stock job which I worked for about four months. I had severe sleeping problems and cracked one day, called them and told them I quit.

After college I jumped from job to job until I settled on a couple of places I could tolerate. At the time I lived in an area where jobs were easy to get. The first one was a call center job. I did their training for a couple of weeks and then quit without notifying them. I just wasn't cut out for that sort of work and couldn't face going in for real work there. I technically was fired because, having not shown up that day, I was automatically fired simply for not being there on time. After that I got a job doing overnight stock at Walmart, which sucked. Within about a week I had a couple of other job offers, so I quit Walmart without giving notice.

The vast majority of jobs I've had, I have given notice, and generally wouldn't recommend otherwise. At the time it might feel like you'll never want to work there again, but it's best to leave the option open. You never know what life will throw at you. Luckily I ended up getting a decent job in my field, and have been doing well since. So I don't think any of my quitting has ever impacted me negatively. I never list Walmart or the call center as part of my work history, anyway, but this can be harder to get away with if you've been with the company for any significant amount of time.
