Redditors who were once rich, how did you lose it all?

Finally I can sort of contribute, there is quite a story in my family about this.

My ancestors came to Finland with Catherine Jagiellon back in the 16th century, and just before she left for Sweden she gave them a huge piece of land from the Karelian part of the country, and a great amount of money with it. So they built one of the largest estates in Finland, there were almost a hundred peasants working for the farm in the 17th century during which the estate only grew larger. In the 1740ish the ancestral family running the estate consisted of a grandmother, mother, father and a son. The father died in an accident, and the young son in his late teens named Johan was handed the ownership of the farm.

The problem was that Johan was the black sheep of the family, he was considered a rude drunk who loved to gamble in a tavern in a nearby village in his free time instead of being a student or a hard worker. He fucked around a ton, and once he got caught he was forced to marry a woman from a lower class. Slowly Johan burned most of the bridges with the Swedish and Russian nobles thanks to the fact that he barely spoke the languages. But even though he was a yokel both his mother and grandmother loved him dearly. Slowly the estate lost it's reputation, the peasants hated their lord who raised the prices of his lands out of nowhere and moved away.

In 1750s a noble family from western part of Finland visited the estate, so Johan decided to drink with them. They proceeded to play some dice, and for some reason unknown to anyone, he bet the whole farm on one roll. I don't know what the men of the other family offered but he lost. he lost it all. Apparently he tried like hell to make it "not official" but the men of the other family started to threaten him and things escalated so much that Johan's mother and grandmother persuaded him to leave the estate with his children. There was a saying up to 20th century in the eastern part of Finland "He drinks like a Virsu", Virsu being the last name of Johan. I have the pleasure of being the first person in my family to be named after him(my third name thank god).

TL;DR my ancestor gambled away a huge estate and most of the family fortune
