Redditors whose father, grandfather or great grandfather fought in WWII, what is their most interesting war story they’ve told you?

My grandfather was in the navy though never “fought” in the war in the sense of shooting people, but he was part of the cleanup group that got sent to Japan after the bombings. What I remember him talking about was how in shambles everything was and the complete disrepair all the buildings were in. I was pretty young at the time, so I believe he was trying to keep it kosher but I do remember him talking about a lot of “courtesan” houses for young American sailors. Knowing his age at the time (18) he most likely visited them.

He brought back a Japanese whale comb, which was given to me for some reason. Regrettably I don’t know where it is due to my parents moving, college, etc. But on the comb it does say “Made in Occupied Japan”, or something of that ilk. I should really ask my parents about it, as I’d love to get it framed/mounted now.
