Relationship, Life and General Advice Tuesday megathread

I have a co-worker who I've been friends with before either of us began working here. I pretty much got her the job and it's been a year since she started. Our jobs are similar, except the main reasoning for the creation of her position was to be extra help to me where I need and be a form of backup for immediate services when I am out.

It hasn't been easy sailing because she's shy and scared to mess up. This means that she basically needs someone to hold her hand and tell her exactly what to do. I love helping people, so I tried to help wherever possible and show her things that weren't even necessary just to give her a leg up. Then she began complaining that the job was too hard and she couldn't handle everything. So I backed off and stuck to just her specific tasks. Now, months later, the boss wants her to know how to do certain tasks in case of emergency while I'm out. Keywords: Emergency while I'm out. This means something that has to be done right away... it can't wait a day. I explained to her that I'll show her, but these occasions rarely pop up... regardless I showed her everything and let her do some that came up to get experience.

After I explained this, there have been multiple instances where she takes it upon herself to do my work and I have no knowledge of it until after it goes through my supervisor. This isn't an issue in itself, but it leaves me completely unaware of important tasks that I'm responsible for (this is just one specific thing... there are other things I don't mind her completing without my knowledge). It's a bit irritating (I don't like multiple hands in the pot while I'm cooking), but I don't want to outright tell her not to do it because it's good that she's finally trying and taking initiative. I was thinking of something along the lines of "let me know before you do this so I'm at least knowledgeable of what's going on." Plus, it was not an emergency.

Is my plan to handle it ok or am I overreacting?
