This is a pretty enlightening video.

60-70% of Pokemon's revenue comes merchandising alone. Only 20% comes from the games, and since Pokemon Go counts for 5% of that, it's really only 15% for every single other pokemon game, much less if you only count the main series.

They are basically just ads for the merchandise, just like old Saturday morning cartoons were often only ads for the merchandise. They don't have to care about the games because the main purpose of the games is to introduce new pokemon to sell more merchandise.

They don't care about the games, and they don't have to. The only objective they really need is to get people looking at the new pokemon and buying pokemon shirts, dolls, action figures, whatever. Do with that what you will.
