Left-wing and right-wing are political ideologies. They stand for certain philosophies that express how governments and economies should be structured. That is why things like taxation and social welfare fall squarely into left-wing and ring-wing politics.

The US Democratic and Republican parties do not represent the left-wing or right-wing with any purity. Instead their platforms are based more around building constituencies. Things like gun control and immigration policy and abortion are taken into the platform out of expediency or calculation.

Karl Marx was opposed to gun control. Cesar Chavez was opposed to illegal immigration. Both were clearly leftists.
