A reminder to drink to thirst (and no more than 400-800 ml/hr) during runs. Excessive water intake can result in exercise induced hyponatremia (water toxicity) and all kinds of nasty complications including death. Link to an interesting medical article inside.

Salt tablets certainly do help but are not the cure. One reason over-hydration can be toxic is because your nervous system needs your body to be a great conductor. Despite what your middle school science teacher said, pure water is a actually a horrible conductor. It’s the impurities in water that make it a good conductor.

But yes this is still something to be weary off. You’d be surprised by how many people have no idea drinking too much water is bad for you, so good job spreading awareness. I heard on a podcast the other day that someone was having a contest to see who could drink a glass of water every 5 minutes (without peeing), and that whoever lasted the longest won. A nurse called in and told them it was dangerous. They laughed. A woman died. Don’t mean to freak anyone out, the average runner does not have to worry about this, but its something to be cautious of
