Remote work discussion thread
I actually wrote down some issues I've been wanting to talk to my manager about
Why did you chose to work remotely?
Started 50% and now 100% - junior IC
What was the transition like?
Messier than it should've been. Team of junior devs (incl. me) and manager that is MIA a lot of the time
Are you happy at your remote job?
Surprisingly, not as happy as I thought I'd be. It is the 'dream' for many here including me but I've noticed my skills diminish considerably and it's only been a month. I was highly motivated working on projects that interested me from home but when you are working for someone else and following their rules/tech/legacy without communication can be really unfulfilling. I would be a lot more happier if I were able to travel and not stuck inside these walls but that doesn't look very promising.
What are some potential red-flags in remote job postings (or what are some things to look out for)?
Lack of self development
Lack of mentor-ship
Hard to motivate yourself to exercise (and easy to put on a lot of weight)
If you are single it can be extremely isolating
Lack of promotions (especially for contractors but goes for employees too, people are much more likely to get promoted/raises/opportunities if interacting in person)
Very long hours most of the time (can't charge for most of them)
Short hours if there's not much to do (can't charge for this)
