Representation matters: a ballerina took to the streets of my home town to show young people that being born into poverty does not mean they aren't capable of achieving great and beautiful things.

I love the idea, but the reality is pretty cruel. Many of those little girls are going to go back to their homes and will want desperately to take ballet lessons.

That puts an enormous pressure on the already burdened parents. I’m sure it’ll snap some parents out of bad habits, but for those that are already doing everything they can? That’s heartbreaking. You literally can’t provide for your kid’s dream, and you have to live through that every day.

From what I hear, ballet gets very expensive and very competitive pretty quickly. Again, I love the idea, but if it isn’t accompanied by something tangible and consistent for the kids, isn’t it just fantasy?
