Resent how Charlie Hebdo cartoonists were vilified as racists: Salman Rushdie - Firstpost [NP]

I don't think he is being a troll. Freedom of speech and expression is a very powerful idea but it's very easy to overlook it's consequences. It's hard to support somebody's right to free speech while opposing their view at the same time. Even in the country "born to be free", try asking Americans how they feel about the Westboro Baptist Church. Charlie Hebdo cartoonists know all about this. They know exactly how to push your buttons. It's a wonderful strategy to stir up controversy to sell their magazine and push their ideological agenda.

Chutiya Hindu or something ?... pictorial depiction of Mohammed PBUH, Christ and Rama having sex...

I'm not going to logde a police complaint over some hurt feelings. You can keep trying but it's not going to happen buddy.

No decent Muslim will say, "je suis charlie". It's equivalent to saying, "I'm a murtad who hates Islam and other religions."

Actually, he might have a point here. I don't know enough about the Quran or other Abrahamic religions so it's entirely possible that they don't support the idea of free speech and expression. In fact, things like blasphemy laws are diametrically oppossed to the idea. It might explain why it's so hard to grasp this concept. The French/European renaissance ideas don't seem to get enough "air time" in the holy books ;)

If he does want to debate this, he needs to up his game... a lot! He could have come back at me with questions about the hate speech laws that protect some religious groups in France/Europe but not others. He could have come back at me and discussed the limits of free speech. What happens when freedom of expression tramples over other fundamental rights? I'll leave these fun questions unanswered. Think of it as some philosophy/law/ethics/poli-sci homework for everybody to think about.

It's a tough battle of ideas. He was gracious enough to respond with a semi-coherent response to my post so let's not call him a troll just yet.
