Response to r/guncontrol post asking "What is the end goal?"

Most assume cops will show up in time when they call 911.

People have this idea of the police as gun wielding ninja-heroes. Sometimes they are, but your average cop is an administrator with people skills. Most policemen have terrible gun handling and poor marksmanship. This isn't entirely their fault as the academy only spends a week talking about guns, at least half of that time is classroom discussion about the rules of engagement which means that they get perhaps 2-1/2 days of range time which for some of them was the first time they ever touched a gun.

When I asked an instructor why, he said that the chance of any of the cadets ever firing their gun is very low, but they will fill out lots of paperwork so that's what the training focuses on. Their job is mostly to document an event after it has happened.
