"In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over." — Dan Hodges.

The soviets wouldnt have been able to murder millions of their own people while going door to door if even 1/100th of those doors ended in the kgb kill teams being splattered by an old man with a simple shotgun.

Sociopaths, murderers, those kinds of people prefer to prey on the weak. Many of them are inherently cowardly and rarely participate in behaviors that put their own lives at risk as they only view their own life as having value. When you remove guns from the common person, you are also attaching to them the label of 'weak' and 'defenseless'. This emboldens the more villainous people in society to take advantage of them and over time this escalates into ever increasing levels of violence and abuse.

Guns are a deterrent. They can protect you by simply existing and never even being used.
