In retrospect, what wasn't that big of a deal in your life?

I got caught "hacking" back in high school in '99. What this entailed was logging into the school's network with my student account (a Windows 3.1 network, probably some Citrix backend), looking at some logs (available to everyone) that indicated someone was logging into the network as "install", and then logging in with that account myself, because there was no password on the account.

Keep in mind that our student accounts frequently broke (somehow?) preventing students from logging in, but this account always worked, and I could access my files (and everyone else's) when my account "broke".

One day I was pulled into the teachers office when our school district's IT guy noticed someone using the "install" account from my terminal.

Suspended for 3 days and no longer allowed to use computers at school. Threatened with expulsion if they could prove I tampered with grades. This was also a ramp up class during my junior year that was resulting in an actual job my senior year that I would get school credits for. They informed me they would inform my future "employer" of this suspension, with the option of not working with me during my senior year. They actually didn't care at all.

Which is really good, because after my senior year internship, that job paid for me to get my BS and my MS in CS, employed me for 13 years, until I moved on to my current position at one of main tech giants today.

At the time of my suspension I cried like a bitch for an hour ON THE FLOOR OF MY CLASSROOM, which happened to occur on the same day as my mom's birthday. In the end it didn't matter, but if I lost that internship I have no idea how my life would have turned out.

I have my suspension letter framed and on the wall, right next to my DCMA notice from Charter.
