I agree that Retsuko is an idiot. I almost screamed at my TV when Retsuko proceeded to walk down the dark street saying "I'm safe!" while on her phone, unaware of her surroundings...

I'll still play devil's avocado, though. I say this as someone who has been in a similar life or death situation with a psychopath where my life was in physically in danger. Nobody around me knew the gravity of the situation because they didn't personally experience it for themselves.

It can be hard to understand the gravity of the situation if you've lived a totally normal life in a first-world country having never been exposed to extreme situations where your life or safety is truly in danger.

My "friends" at the time were like Retsuko. Just totally normal people who grew up in a first-world country, having never been in a life-or-death situation. Having never had to face their mortality. They just didn't see the big deal. Retsuko couldn't either. That sort of stuff only happens on TV or in movies, right?
