Review of existing engines and why I think Source 2 could fill a certain sweetspot

Interesting read on your thoughts on the engine. I have to agree on your thoughts on Unity disadvantages it's out of box features just can't match something like ue4.

I kind of disliked the fact you almost had to buy from the asset store just to make up for the lacks of things. However there are certain assets that are extremely good, then you have the very certain asset where someone has gone even futher like segi voxel based global illumination, Amplify Texture 2 virutal texturing & Ctaa temporal anti aliasing.

My experience with ue4 was kind of less positive, i remember trying to do the Ai and found it to be painfully long, if i wanted to do a simple behaviour or do some testing i had to jump through all these hoops. This was a long time ago & i have no idea if it is the same.

I've used Cryengine 3 sdk a bit long time ago & cryengine V is a improvement, it's a bit more simplier but there are still some things which are still heavily outdated that i've would not be surprised if they been around cryengine 2. I would not discredit Cryengine v, it's in a process of revamping itself. I remember when cryengine eaas came out people asked for source code, better documentation & roadmap & these have come out, but these are happening at a much slow rate then say someone like unity as they have more manpower.

The source 2 engine i am looking forward to but fear it will come out too late, like somewhere in the 2020. I also fear the technology might be behind like lighting wise.
